Re: AMD Turion 64x2 garbled screen during installation

up-date I have had 4 total, Dell Inspiron 1501 computers as an attempt at having more than one that runs linux, plus I was trying to get one that runs a 64 bit CPU. Brief history. The computer I am typing this with is the only Dell Inspiroon 1501 laptop that I have ever gotten linux to run on. It ha...

Re: easy switch from solydx to solydk

Thanks to all for your replays. Good stuff. I will consider these suggestions before I decide whether to just do a full install....

Much appreciated

easy switch from solydx to solydk

Does anyone know a way to switch from solydx to solydk dsk top without a full installation.

I am familiar with ubuntu "apt-get install kubuntu-desktop" which gets you from xfce to KDE, so I am wondering if there is a similar trick in solydx?

Thanks much

Re: AMD Turion 64x2 garbled screen during installation

well, the only choice that give the word "quiet" at the end of the sentence after pushing tab is "boot without plymouth". Tried inerting "noapic" and then "no_timer_check" in front of the two "--" then hitting enter. ....quiet noapic -- ...quiet no_timer_check -- Also tried inserting those infront o...

Re: AMD Turion 64x2 garbled screen during installation

During the 10 second count-down, hitting esc, or enter or space bar to "boot without Plymouth", "boot in compatibility mode". no problem here, pressing a key spawns a list of 8 line items to choose from, 2 o which are "boot without Plymouth" and "boot in compatibility mode" Then press e to append n...

Re: AMD Turion 64x2 garbled screen during installation

well, I tried the above instructions with no luck. After pressing space, or escape, or whatever (tried several) I noticed a message at the bottom that said press "alt" to change parameters of the "without plymouth" or "compatibility mode" boot choices. pressing "e" puts an "e" at the end of the resu...

What is APIC?

How can we live without it?

Is this something common only with 64 bit installations?

Re: AMD Turion 64x2 garbled screen during installation

Well, hitting the space bar during the 10 second count-down allows me to "boot without Plymouth", "boot in compatibility mode", etc. All with the same result. I was able to capture the message given when booting in "regular" mode. when the boo process starts after the 10 second count-down, I see onl...

Re: AMD Turion 64x2 garbled screen during installation

You most likely will need to install in safe graphics mode with the VESA driver, and after installation update the video driver to the current one. Ok, how do I do that? Is this something I should see as an option when I boot with a CD or DVD? Can't say that I have the slightest idea how to do that...

AMD Turion 64x2 garbled screen during installation

Greetings to all I just built a DELL inspiron 1501 with a Turion 64 bit CPU. Without going into all the details, which might be interesting at some time, let me get to the point. I was able to install Windows Vista Pro 64 bit version. That runs fine. I tried to install Linux SolydK 64 bit for dual-b...

Re: DOCKY, getting it to work in SolydX

As suggested in the thread, I used the killall xscreensaver and killall xlockmore command in the terminal and wnet on with the installation. I don't seem to have broken anything. Docky runs fine, but it would not enlarge the icons when mousing over them until I enabled compositing in the "windows ma...

DOCKY, getting it to work in SolydX

Hello; So I have been cheating on SolydX with Mint, and cheating on Mint with SolydX for about a year. I like them both and try to give them equal props. Does that make me shallow? Anyway, I was able to get "Docky" working in Mint with no problem, but when I go to download, and install it on SolydX,...

Re: New HDD, how to partition and have permissions after

Well, this just gets odd upon odd. so, similar to Orbmiser, I had ZERO problems with the 60 gig. I just happily created what ever partitoins I wanted, installed several distors on seperate partitions, and was able to read, write, to the large "storage" partition. Then, similar to what ScottQuier is ...

Re: New HDD, how to partition and have permissions after

ilu - Your description is encouraging, but you seem to be assuming some things about my understanding of linux. I must be more of a beginner than you are. You said... 1. Start gparted, write partition table and partitions the way I want them. right off the bat, I don't know what "the way I want them...

Re: New HDD, how to partition and have permissions after

Something occurred to me. I just wanted to make sure we are on the same page. I have no trouble "mounting" the storage drive. I double click on it, and it opens up, and if there were any files in it, I am guessing that I could open them. In fact, if I had opened it prior to running gparted, I would ...

New HDD, how to partition and have permissions after<SOLVED>

I have a 60 GiB hard drive that I sucessfully created several 10 gig partitions that I installed each of several distros (SolydX, Ubuntu, Mint) and a 30 partition for storage. I have been able to use the storage partition by saving things to it etc while booted in each of the distros. I procured a u...
