Re: Problem with kernel 3.13

you can't have the cake and eat it :) Stable is different from Stable+Backports (specially if they are not tidily controlled) I did not state or imply that they're the same. I used the [quoted] kernel.org distinction ("Mainline=development, Stable=released version"), not the Debian branch release d...

Re: Problem with kernel 3.13

yep, but kobros that is a stable backported kernel (bpo): different beast entirely ;) I am not convinced. This is a direct quotation from kernel.org : Mainline Mainline tree is maintained by Linus Torvalds. It's the tree where all new features are introduced and where all the exciting new developme...

Re: Problem with kernel 3.13

No such problems with this 3.13 kernel in MX-14 :

Linux lappy 3.13-0.bpo.1-686-pae #1 SMP Debian 3.13.5-1~bpo70+1 (2014-03-15) i686 GNU/Linux

Re: MX14Beta1 now Beta2

@fleabus: Pls cancel that installation of the current MX-14 non-pae. There's a serious bug in it. Another fixed .iso is expected within a few days. @fleabus: here you can find links to the corrected MX-14-non-pae .iso ..... http://forum.mepiscommunity.org/viewtopic.php?f=91&t=35864 ....oops, rokytn...

Re: LibreOffice, MS Office - Vendor Lock-In

I haven't touched or used any MSoffice application since early 2003. It is my experience that most business users of MSoffice applications did not use more than 5% of the capabilities of (mainly) Excel and Word. After 2003 I used Staroffice, then Openoffice, then LibreOffice in linux distros,; all o...

Re: MX14Beta1 now Beta2

In order to honor requests by various users to get a non-pae version in MX-14, anticapitalista has released a second version today (March 26) : MX-14-non-pae. Exactly the same as MX-14 except * uses the 3.12-0.bpo.1-486 kernel * uses an older version of flash by default * apt upgrades to 26-03-2014 ...

Re: MX14Beta1 now Beta2

MX-14 had to fit on a CD. That was a primary goal. Not so much because of people using older hardware, but because of lots of users having limited speed as well as data-caps on internet connections. So the choice was made to go for lightweight midori as its browser, which was later replaced with qup...

Re: Any plans for SDR and ADS-B support?

Just (temporarily) enable the Debian Jessie repos (if you want to install in SolydK which is testing based), do an apt-get update and install the SDR-stuff you want - with all dependencies met. There's lots of it. Check out in Synaptic first to see what's there. Disable the debian Jessie repo afterw...

Re: Conversion of any SolydXK distribution into SolydK BO

I think so too.
In any case the statement/claim "...conversion of any SolydXK distribution into SolydK BO" is incorrect:
Going from SolydX to SolydK BO using the meta package does not bring in any KDE packages. So, It's still SolydX.

Re: Conversion of any SolydXK distribution into SolydK BO

Try this simulation in a terminal to see what that "transfer command" will do.
It doesn't actually do it because of the -s (=simulate) flag :

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get -s install solydkbo-meta

Re: Skipping update packs?

Suggestion: An alternative approach (when skipping UP's) might be installing and using the program xdelta3 (in repo), where : 1. SolydXK (or volunteer users) create and provide delta files between subsequent .iso (UP)releases. 2. The user downloads the (properly identified) delta file and uses xdelt...

Re: bootloader

If you boot from an USB-stick that usb-stick gets to be /dev/sda. It's the live boot disk at that point.
Once installed (and after removing the stick) you boot from the harddisk and that's the bootdisk : /dev/sda

Re: The update release cycle

For Debian Stable there are various "point releases' (6.1, 6.2, 6.3, etc.) where new .isos are released, so new users won't have to install a lot of previously released security updates that were not in the previous point release. I think I can guess to answer to the question wether SolydXK BE will ...

Re: I need your opinion: off-line installation of locales

My recommendation for SolydXK: On-line ; to keep the media size as small as possible. There are still lots of folks that will refuse a 2+ GB download, because of low speed, unreliable connections and/or monthly download caps. Personally it doesn't matter which option you chose: I have a fast 100/100...
