Re: Ubuntu 13.10: Reinstallation wipes out all/other partiti

I backed away from all *buntu distros like 5 years ago, after experiencing a total wipe (multiboot system) just like this one. So, it's happened before... Can't remember which version it was.
After that I remained with real Debian/Debian-based distros.

Re: Discourse for SolydXK

The current phpbb forum software used is good enough for me.
I do not particularly like the flashy, multi-coloured look which seems to be central in Discourse implementations.
And maintenance will be a real drag.....Java anyone?

Re: MX14Beta1 now Beta2

I registered on Mepis Community Forums many years ago, so I've never even seen that silly question. My guess would be snakes. Wikipedia ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tilde ) provides the answer (I think....:-) ): It is sometimes used in Rogue-like games to represent water or snakes . Now I'm stuck ...

Re: Keyboard assignment/locale

My keyboard seems to be stuck at US, although I stipulated UK at install (@ and " reversed position) and the keyboard settings indicate UK, a small but irritating thing when I am used to a UK keyboard layout - not a deal breaker though. Have you tried (as root): # dpkg-reconfigure locales and if st...

Re: A Synaptic query

There´s a catch to this (it doesn't cover all the angles...) Anything you have installed (in your old installation) that is not currently available from the repositories in your sources.list will not be installed in the 'import' (second) step. For instance: save your self-compiled .debs somewhere be...

Re: A Synaptic query

..... I plan soon to do a complete reinstall soon in the hope of getting rid of some annoying Udev problems. There's a much easier method: If you want to do a re-installation and you want that new installation to reflect your current installation (but with new, fresh, unaltered config files) then y...

Re: need to fix grub after installing another distro

If you would decide to have another go at a multibooting setup (with AVLinux or another one), please note the following: Boot into the newly installed distro. Go into a terminal and make sure you have root rights. If the new distro did not install grub into the MBR during installation on HD, then yo...

I know, but I meant that new (and some seasoned) linux users will avoid going outside of X. It's out of their comfort zone. Therefore the acceptance and use of these tools probably remains fairly limited.

Re: 2 SolydXK goodies: apt and inxi

inxi is indeed a wonderful system-info tool, also in SolydXK. Originally made by H2, to be found on smxi.org. What surprises me is that some of H2's other power tools, like sgfxi and especially smxi (which includes sgfxi), are relatively unknown (or not used) by SolydXK users. These tools MUST be ru...

Re: Chrome extensions: possible security risk

The developers of the original extensions concerned sold out and the new owners had little scruples with injecting some adware in these extensions. It's a good thing that Google threw them out.

No, Adblock is not one of them.....:-)

rolgiati: It really shouldn't be necessary to install both N-M and Wicd. Just choose the one which best meets your requirements and stick with it. Note that neither GUI manager is actually necessary if you only use a wired connection. My understanding is that they cannot both be installed but if yo...

Re: wireless driver problem

Have a look here: https://wiki.debian.org/wl and provide the output of this (root-command): lspci -n | grep 14e4 Your BCM43228 pci adapter should show up as: 14E4:4359 The method in the above wiki should then fix your problem. More info; Broadcom has a readme.txt here: http://www.broadcom.com/docs/l...
