Am back to Debian, this time with KDE, and it all works well.
But Firefox may have been causing the whole DE to freeze (or some combination).

Re: Install a newer kernel

Hi... It doesn't work fine for me... I changed my apt-sources with adding experimental, but no new kernel after an update... only 2.6 and 3.2... I would have liked to install the 3.4 (lLinus kernel...) My 2 cents for the answer... and a big hug... :D Kernel 3.4 isn't available in experimental AFAIK...

Looks like firefox is using a lot of CPU. Does the freezing only occur when you are running firefox?

change the theme to oxygen, reboot and try again. any difference?
Not upgrading SolydX... I did it on a Debian NetInst with E17 (I don't mind if it brakes, but no oxygen). I think libgtk-3-0 is the real problem. I don't think the synaptic updated caused it.

Re: Breakages and News - SolydX-tracking Debian SID

I see a few possible bugs with today's upgrade (which brings libgtk-3-0 3.8): critical bugs of libgtk-3-0 (3.4.2-6 -> 3.8.2-1) <unfixed> #709548 - libgtk-3-0: most recent gtk upload breaks.... (nearly) everything (in GNOME) critical bugs of synaptic (0.80 -> 0.80.1) <unfixed> #709581 - [synaptic] cr...

I also installed apper,... Unfortunately, the integration with their own update manager, and the source being C++, makes it hard to maintain. There's a gnome frontend similar to apper with different dependencies. I had to install it some days ago, trying to solve that *?! bug of alacarte :roll: I d...

Interesting idea... I've never seen an installer do this, but it would be useful for recovery. If this is implemented, it should only be an option. I would end up with too many grub entries (at least one more per install) if this was by default :lol:

If that's it, could you test the following: su echo "#!/bin/bash" > /usr/bin/mate-help echo "xdg-open http://wiki.mate-desktop.org" >> /usr/bin/mate-help chmod +x /usr/bin/mate-help It's not much, is it? Minor updates on the following packages, now in testing: updatemanager - new "unknown state" icon. ddm - Broadcom: multiple chipsets not handled correctly and check for internet connection on startup. debian-plymouth-manager - did not save grub settings Sounds good. Will upgrade momentarily... Edit...
