Bumblebee and SolydK

Postby Litux1516 » 05 Sep 2013 10:05

Hello:

I installed bumblebee from the repos (UP 2013.08.06).
After the reboot the system does not load the GLX module, so the glxgears throw me a GLX module error.
Something interesting is that if I remove everything related to nvidia, the intel driver load the GLX module and the system is able to run all the desktop effects.

Do you have any how-to or instructions...

Thanks in advance

ddm already has support for optimus systems, you could follow the recommendation provided there.

if you want a more "manual" intervention" see this entry https://wiki.debian.org/Bumblebee#Installation
bumblebee became a lot easier (not easy) in the last couple months in testing.

I tried DDM, but it doesn't recognize the Nvidia board and only suggest me the intel driver. Therefore, I tried install bumblebee using apt-get. After reboot I lose all the effect (meaning that GLX is not working). My next step is going to be install bumblebee from git repo.
And I'll back with news of how was the thing.
Thanks

can you please share the output (as user, not root) of

Code: Select all

inxi -Gxx
following the instructions in the wiki (and in an install where you have no leftovers of failed nvidia installs) all you should need to do is

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install -y bumblebee bumblebee-nvidia primus

Code: Select all

sudo groupadd bumblebee

Code: Select all

sudo usermod -a -G bumblebee $USER
(where $USER is you)
in the end you have the intel driver loaded by default;
a tipical inxi output with bumblebee successfully installed looks similar to this
inxi -Gx
Graphics: Card-1: Intel 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller bus-ID: 00:02.0 <<intel card
Card-2: NVIDIA GF108M [GeForce GT 630M] bus-ID: 01:00.0 <<nvidia card
X.Org: 1.13.3 drivers: intel (unloaded: fbdev) FAILED: vesa Resolution: 1366x768@60.0hz <<intel driver loaded
GLX Renderer: Mesa DRI Intel Ivybridge Mobile GLX Version: 3.0 Mesa 9.1.3 Direct Rendering: Yes << openGL working and provided by the intel driver

One of my laptops has an optimus type nvidia card (GT 540M). Is there any reason to install bumblebee if I'm not a gamer?

apart from the improved performance that the nvidia drivers give you you have also to consider battery life (without bumblebee both gpus are all the time on and that hits hard battery) and power management (you get a lower temperatures with bumblebee)

these are the 3 main factors to install bumblebee in an optimus system.

Bumblebee and SolydK Kernel 3.10

Postby Litux1516 » 17 Oct 2013 19:33

Hello guys:

I updated my system using the updatemanager. After that I run the ddm tool to set up the bumblebee-nvidia driver.
Then reboot the laptop, cross fingers, and... doen't work

Code: Select all

miguel@litutux ~ $ optirun glxgears

Do you have any idea to fix this?

Here you are:

Code: Select all

miguel@litutux ~ $ inxi -Gxx
Graphics: Card-1: Intel 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller bus-ID: 00:02.0 chip-ID: 8086:0166
           Card-2: NVIDIA GK107M [GeForce GT 640M] bus-ID: 01:00.0 chip-ID: 10de:0fd2

GLX Renderer: Mesa DRI Intel Ivybridge Mobile GLX Version: 3.0 Mesa 9.1.6 Direct Rendering: Yes

I can't see the difference...
Perhaps the chip-id...
