xfce4-statusnotifier-plugin needs to be installed and placed into the panel

Postby ilu » 26 May 2020 18:08

Since chromium recently changed their way of handling tray icons, electron apps won't show tray items on the xfce panel. There are a lot of issues about the problems on different desktops (all except KDE) all over github starting with electron v. 8
https://github.com/electron/electron/is ... -565061274.

xfce4-statusnotifier-plugin needs to be installed and placed into the panel. I think the old xembed xfce4-panel/built-in systray plugin named "notification area" can safely be removed because the new one catches all.

There is also mention of https://gitlab.com/vala-panel-project/x ... ray-plugin but I haven't tested that.

I removed the Notification Area after adding the Status Notifier Plugin.
After a logout/login Clipman and Network Manager did not show up.
I'm afraid you need both.

I removed clipman because it interferes with inkscapes copy&paste but I forgot to check for networkmanagers notifications. Sorry about that. Everything else moved into the new applet. We can have both, people say they don't interfere. Main issue was to get those electron-based chat apps working again (Riot, Rocket, Slack, Skype) - although I have only tested Riot.

I have updated solydx-system-adjustments-11 to include xfce4-statusnotifier-plugin in /etc/skel/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xfce4-panel.xml.
