Software Manager show incomplete list

Postby davaponte » 21 May 2013 14:48

When I use Software Manager I can't see all the items. The list is truncated. I know that because I am looking for items that I know exists. If I search it in Synaptic they appear but Software Manager does not show it.

You can see a screenshot here: http://i.imgbox.com/admpHxkx.png

(I can't use IMG tag because it does not allow big images)

This looks like a bug, but I need a bit more information.

What steps did you take so that we can repeat the issue.
I think you simply went to Games?
If so, mine doesn't list more than games beginning with "e".

Some things to test:
  • Run softwaremanager from terminal to see if it outputs something useful:

    Code: Select all

    gksudo softwaremanager
For me that didn't show anything interesting.
  • Is GeneC right, and do you see all when tracking our testing repository?
  • Does LMDE have the same issue?
Did I already mention I would like this application replaced? ;)

[EDIT]
There have been some commits on mintinstall: https://github.com/linuxmint/mintinstall/commits/master
One of them was on Jan 5, which should enable loading more items when scrolled to the bottom. Somehow that doesn't work on our version. This is definitely a bug that I need to address before the next UP.

NOTE: This is SolydX-64, but upgraded from LMDE Unofficial!

Yes.. I get about 30-40 full screen scrolls. LOTS of games..
Starting with WINE and ending with drascula-italian....

If I go to board games I get all 39 listed.

yep
1- open software manager
2- select games
3- scroll to the end
4- last entry is drascula-italian
(software manager has a mixed alphabetic and rated order: first it displays the app with rates and then all the rest in alphabetic order: it's this last one that is truncated at d for me)
Schoelje wrote: Some things to test:

tested here with our testing repos and with sid: similar results.

Try it with window maximized..

I get 36 pages of games when I click on the scrollbar. (about 17 games per page). Some 612+/- games..
Isn't that right?

Okay, I'll need to upgrade this to Mint's github version.
It seems that there is no viable alternative out there, which means this application is a nominee to be rebuild from the ground up, but drastically simplified: The voting sounds nice, but it has enormous draw-backs. It makes this application very expensive to maintain: this change will cost me several days, and then it needs to be tested.

@GeneC
I bet you have mintinstall and not solydxk-softwaremanager.

For me (SolydX 32 bits tracking production), same issue as Davaponte by using ZZ's method:
1- open software manager
2- select games
3- scroll to the end
4- last entry is drascula-italian
For me it is gcompris-sound-sr (just like Davaponte)

Test with terminal:
gksudo softwaremanager
add_categories took 8.137 ms
build_matched_packages took 0.557 ms
5566
add_packages took 4179.314 ms
add_reviews took 1783.212 ms
CategoriesView
SubCategoriesView
__init__ took 6712.912 ms
show_category took 14.286 ms
show_category took 1620.723 ms
show_category took 1686.574 ms
Nothing changes on the manager
They did not know it was impossible so they did it.

You can all stop testing.
It's obvious this is a bug, and I need to solve it, or you must have found an alternative in the mean time...

now seriously:

for ane and Davaponte it's gcompris-sound-sr (we never get those results displayed)

A simple idea: perhaps our two groups haven't the same repos (tracking vs production) some don't have the same number of programs listed... or drascula-italian made perhaps bugging your manager
(I know it's a ridiculous joke but I have to say it )

Absolutely agree!!!

[rant on]
This totally useless piece of software has been totally useless since day 1 of its creation and does not look like getting any better! Why would we want a busy busy man like our sole developer to waste time fixing bugs in it when there is a perfectly functional alternative aready available. What the hell does this package give that Synaptic does not except a whole lot less flexibility and a rating system that only the most naive of sheep would follow! [/rant off]

Phew, now I feel better! :D

I have occasionally been accused of not being "newbie" understanding enough :ugeek: ; and maybe this is such a time & application; but, surely Schoelje has more important things to worry about?

just my opinion,
greywolf.

I agree with you, Greywolf, but a comprehensive software manager seems to be a big selling point, especially for newbies. It's something that always gets attention in reviews.

There is a topic on Muon: http://forums.solydxk.nl/viewtopic.php?f=44&t=324
I only wish I could add Muon Software Center only, the package manager has no much additions to Synaptic, I think.

Regarding dropping the software manager all together in favor op synaptic, I'd like to see the discussion in the "Suggestions and Ideas" section.
Could you start that discussion with your last post, Greywolf?
Your "rant" could provoke some interesting opinions or even solutions.

Hey Greywolf, you are right! Let's remove Software Manager. We have Synaptic! But wait!!! Let's remove Synaptic too!!! We have terminal!!! Let's make all with terminal. apt-get install or aptitude install whatever you want!

Wait... it was 20 years ago today! My time machine works!

Ok, no more sarcasm. You NEED Synaptic AND Software Manager because not all the users are the same. There are users that feels fine with terminal, others prefers Synaptic and others Software Manager. They are different color glasses for the same task! But we all have the right to choose what glass to use.
